11-15 August in Sarteano
The Giostra del Saracino is essentially a transformation of the knightly tournaments dating back to the Middle Ages. The event begins on 11 August with the "Tratta dei Bossoli", a night show during which, among water and fire games, flag games and drum rolls, the order of the five districts is drawn and the Palio is presented. On August 14, "La Provaccia" is then carried out, during which the jousters test the competition field and refine the various techniques. The event culminates on August 15, during which, after a fascinating historical procession in period costumes made up of over 200 participants, it's time for the real Giostra del Saracino to begin.
20-28 August in Montepulciano
The traditional Bravìo delle Botti takes place in Montepulciano on the last Sunday of August, a historical re-enactment of a challenge between the eight city districts, which in the past competed with horses, and today with barrels. The barrels are pushed and rolled by two athletes for each district, called "spingitori", along the uphill path of about 1800 meters which winds through the suggestive streets of the historic center of the town of Montepulciano, up to the arrival in the churchyard of the Cathedral in the Piazza Grande.
The final day of the event is preceded by a week full of events, which allows you to experience the village of Montepulciano in its maximum vitality.
