Montepulciano

The town itself is perched on a hill between the Valdichiana and the Val d'Orcia. Its extraordinary architectural heritage, with origins dating back as far as Etruscan and Ancient Roman times, through medieval development and the flowering of the Renaissance, is matched by its wealth of cultural artefacts. Alongside the archaeological finds on display in the Civic Museum, the Crociani Gallery exhibits more than two hundred masterpieces, including a portrait attributed to Caravaggio.

The unspoilt nature of the countryside around the town bears testimony to its importance to the local population. Nature lovers should be sure to visit the lake Montepulciano nature reserve. The nearby hamlet of Sant'Albino is home of Terme di Montepulciano, center for prevention, diagnosis and care and a modern spa, fed by curative spring waters.

The town is renowned for its remarkable wines, particularly the celebrated Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, the first Italian wine to obtain the prestigious DOCG denomination.
