The Vinsanto Trail in Torrita di Siena
6km trail that connects the two castles of Torrita di Siena and Montefollonico
According to historical documents, the route follows the ancient medieval path that connected the two castles of Torrita and Montefollonico, the last strongholds of the Republic of Siena against Montepulciano, allied with Florence.
The trail starts in Torrita di Siena and reaches the charming medieval village of Montefollonico, ending at Porta Follonica. Along the way, five equipped rest areas tell the story of these places, the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria a Follonica, known as “Il Conventaccio”, and Ghino di Tacco, the famous “Gentleman Bandit” mentioned by Boccaccio and Dante. The tradition of Vin Santo, a local specialty and symbol of Tuscan hospitality, is another key theme of the itinerary.
