This itinerary goes around the slopes of Mount Cetona; it is characterized by continuous changes of inclination, and for 7 km it runs along a beautiful dirt road that crosses the heart of the mountain.
From the main square of Sarteano, you have to take the road towards Radicofani; then, turn at the first crossroads to the left, after the sports field, towards San Casciano dei Bagni. The road, with several ups and downs, passes the equipped area “Il Biancheto” and reaches the pass of the Cancelli on an uphill road, with two height differences not long, and yet demanding, respectively at 14% and 12%. From here (9.8 km from Sarteano), you have to continue downhill towards San Casciano dei Bagni. From the village, the trail goes back to the road to Sarteano (provincial road S.P. 89 "della Montagna di Cetona"), and after 700 meters it turns left following the sign for Podere Armatello. Then, you have to take the dirt road and continue on the main track, with a great view over Radicofani and Mount Amiata. After 1.5 km, the road goes down firmly. After 4.9 km, you will reach a large intersection: here you will have to continue to the right, uphill. After 900 meters the road turns left, along the rocky slopes of Mount Cetona, and you will get to the village of Fonte Vetriana. Continue downhill for 1.2 km on the main track up to the trunk road S.S. 478 (Sarteano - Radicofani), where you will have to turn right towards Sarteano (7 km). As soon as you take the road S.S. 478, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Spineto Abbey, built in 1085.
