The Barlettaia Trail takes its name from the "barlettai", namely craftsmen from Mount Amiata who built the "barlette", i.e. small wooden barrels, which the pilgrims used for their water supply.
The trail starts from the Temple of San Biagio, from where you have to take Via di Pescaia; after having covered it all, take the provincial road S.P. 146, then turn onto a secondary road to the left, towards the wood of Poggiano. Continuing on the left, you will find the detour to the Buche del Beato, i.e. a rocky hermitage surrounded by woods whose striking caves have remained intact. Once you have passed the Tresa creek, continue in the direction of the medieval village of Monticchiello. Once you have reached the municipal road Pienza-Monticchiello, the trail runs along the panoramic road to Pienza, in the picturesque scenery of the typical Val d'Orcia hills, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The panorama that will open in front of your eyes is that chosen by the director Ridley Scott to set the Elysian fields in the movie "The Gladiator". Once you have reached the paved road S.P. 53, turn left towards the Castle of Spedaletto, built in the 12th century and located along the route of the ancient Via Francigena.
