Via Francigena
For 25 centuries, the Valdichiana Senese has been a melting pot of people, customs and civilizations. Paths of history and rich cultural heritage, the walks of the Valdichiana Senese are a permanent testimony of the past of this land and allow visitors to explore it a sustainable and slow way.
The Via Francigena is between the most famous walking paths of Europe, a walk that for centuries has joined the continent from Canterbury to Rome, crossing United Kingdom, France, Swiss and Italy. In 1944 it was rewarded as “culture route of the Council of Europe”.
The entire itinerary branches off about 2000 km, with more than a half being spread in Italy (88 stages in total). And it’s in Italy and more precisely in Tuscany that it is possible to admire one of the most charming stretches of the whole walk. It starts in Siena and finishes in Ponte a Rigo (little hamlet of the Municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni) before entering Lazio.
Length of the Tuscan-Sienese stretch: about 135 km

How to travel the path: on foot, by bike or horsebackriding
