It is not uncommon to go to a bar or club in Torrita di Siena and cross paths with a Torritese well known in the world of sports whose voice often keeps company with the fans who follow live swimming broadcasts from all over Italy and the world.
A passion, that for journalism, that Tommaso Mecarozzi has always had since childhood. After high school in Montepulciano and university in Siena, he dedicated himself to competitions at RAI, and given his flair for narrating any kind of sport, he decided to take the path of sports commentary.
Chatting with him is always a pleasure because he is someone who likes to talk and tell especially about Torrita, the town where he often returns between work trips:
“To follow swimming competitions I am frequently on the road, and my base today is Rome, but when I can I do not miss a chance to return to the ‘little town’. Here are the roots and the people. Some people choose to cut these roots and gladly do without, but I feel them, they are deep and well rooted... that's why every moment is good to come back! It is true that in the city there is everything and it is another living, but home is still home, and there is quality of life here. Of the Valdichiana Senese I like the scents, the atmosphere, the environment, the life, all those things that have never changed and that it is good never to change, one among all, the slow way of living.”
When Tommaso talks about his hometown, he does so with a special affection, typical of someone who cares about his origins and would never change them: “Torrita has a beautiful communal territory, made up of hills and forests, but above all it has an historic center that by detachment is one of the best medieval historic centers that exists, if not the best ever! I would like it to be able to come to life more because it has all the credentials to contribute to the greater development of the town.”
And about which is the best time to be fascinated by the ancient village, he has no doubt!
"March, during the weeks of the Palio dei Somari. It's breathtaking to behold the beauty of Torrita on those days! The historic center awakens and is beautiful, and then there is a special air. The Palio is the historical festival par excellence, a beautiful event that has grown over time and is very much felt by the town. Before, of course, I was more involved in the festivities, both because of a fact of age and more free time, but even today it is a pleasure to participate albeit often from a distance".
Of the territory of the Valdichiana Senese and specifically of his Torrita, he especially loves the landscapes and food and wine, keeping in mind that: "Not all of the Valdichiana Senese has been discovered, there are still so many things to be discovered by travelers who come here ... Torrita is one of those places that still has so much to show and is not as well known as it deserves to be. That is why I recommend everyone to come and experience an authentic town with so much beauty to see".
The place of the local ambassador's heart:
There are two places from where you can see the profile of Torrita. One is such a special place that it is difficult even to explain it and I don't even try (laughs, ed.), but I assure you that seeing the profile of the town at sunset looking at it from there is a unique experience. The other is a place surrounded by olive trees. Admiring the pattern of the outline of the Torritese old town from the road towards the Cemetery that leads to the Cavone area excites me every time. Everyone should go there and enjoy a different perspective of Torrita di Siena.
