The Via Francigena is the ancient pilgrimage route to the tomb of Saint Peter in Rome. About a half of this 2,000-km trail between Canterbury and Rome is located in Italy, where the route consists of 44 stages.
The Tuscan stretch, certainly among the most striking ones for the beauty of the towns, villages and landscapes, ends in the town of San Casciano dei Bagni, precisely in the small village of Ponte a Rigo, before entering the Lazio. After passing the rugged lands that rise to Radicofani, the view over the small and green valley of the river Paglia will appear before your eyes, alternating with the stony riverbeds of the Rigo and Elvella creeks, as evidence of how impetuous and wild they are during the period of the sudden flood. Whether you are about to take the route to Rome, or you want to experience even just a short stretch of this ancient path, Ponte a Rigo will welcome you with the warmth typical of the Tuscan villages. And why not, you can take a detour and go to Celle sul Rigo or San Casciano dei Bagni.
